Frequently Asked Questions
What will I need for my video conference?
You will only need your ID and access to IACRA (use Chrome). We will ask for all your supporting documentation before we schedule your conference, so you will not need to bring anything else.
How long will it take to get my certificate?
You will have your Temporary Certificate at the end of our video conference! It is 100% legal and ready to use immediately. The physical card will show up in the mail within 90 days, but your temporary certificate is valid for 120 days.
Do Flight Instructor Certificates expire?
Technically, no, but yes! There are very few changes to the new rules (2025) and you will still need to prove "recency" every two years. For the most part the process is the same...you will still need an IACRA application and to meet with a DPE or FSDO to record your event.
What should I do if the certificate does not show up?
Contact us immediately at the 90 day point so we can investigate. Most times it is just lost in the mail and you can request a new one from the FAA for about $2. But if it is something else, we will need to fix it for you so do not hesitate to contact us and let us know that you don't have it.
Can I use my Commercial Certificate to fly privately?
Yes. A Commercial Pilot Certificate is just a higher qualification. You can use your Commercial Certificate as a "Private" certificate for any of the ratings listed. As a reminder, there are many limitations on charging people money to fly, even with a Commercial Certificate, so if you have any specific questions, please feel free to message us.
Why is it called a Certificate and not License?
The key difference lies in terminology. The FAA officially issues a certificate to qualified pilots, while “license” is a common misnomer used in everyday conversation. Both terms generally refer to the same qualifications, but “certificate” is the proper term under FAA regulations.
What do you recommend before renting an airplane?
We recommend getting Renters Insurance. We also recommend that when you go for your checkout, do NOT skip stalls and go arounds. These are the two maneuvers that will be significantly different for each aircraft.
How and when can I pay?
Payment is not due until the end of our video conference when you have the temporary certificate in your email. At that time we will provide the information for either Venmo or Zelle. Paypal and credit card can be accepted, but with an additional fee.
